The Viper Artisan Color Series

The Viper Artisan Color Series represents a new chapter in the evolution of the electric violin—pairing the iconic self-supporting Viper design with a highly limited collection of premium artisan finishes. Built on our 5-string fretless Viper platform, these instruments are designed for players who want the expressive feel of a traditional violin with the freedom, presence, and expanded range that made the Viper legendary.

Each instrument features a figured artisan top finished by hand in our Cleveland, Ohio workshop, where every transparent color is carefully layered to highlight the natural movement and depth of the wood beneath it. No two tops are exactly alike, making each Viper a unique piece of craftsmanship.

Available in extremely limited quantities, the Artisan Color Series introduces five exclusive finishes: Emerald Green, Sapphire Blue, Deep Purple, Crimson Red, and Obsidian. These limited edition electric violins are available exclusively through WoodViolins.com and represent some of the most visually striking Vipers we’ve ever produced.

Combining the comfort of the patented self-supporting Viper system with the familiar feel of a fretless fingerboard, the Artisan Color Series is built for modern performers, touring artists, recording musicians, and the next generation of electric string players looking for an instrument that stands apart both visually and sonically.

The World's First Self Supporting Violin

The Viper is designed to support itself, so your body doesn’t have to.

Our patented self-support system allows the instrument to hang freely from the shoulder, eliminating the need for a traditional shoulder rest or constant clamping between the neck and jaw. Every Viper includes a custom strap and adjustable support arm, carefully balanced to distribute weight naturally and comfortably.

Frequently asked questions

Will these finishes be available in the Viper PRO Models?

Yes! These finishes will be made available in all Viper PRO configurations soon, in the interim you can reach out via our custom shop form to get a custom build started in these finishes.

Do I hold the Viper under the chin like a standard violin?

Unlike a traditional violin, the Viper is fully self-supporting. Using the included strap and adjustable support arm, the instrument hangs naturally from the shoulder, eliminating the need to clamp it between your chin, neck, and shoulder.

This design allows for tension-free playing, increased mobility, and a more open, natural posture, especially during long sessions or high-energy performances. Your head, neck, and shoulders remain relaxed, and your hands are free to move without compensating for balance or support.

Once adjusted, the Viper feels stable and effortless—letting you focus entirely on playing, not holding the instrument in place.

How much does the Viper weigh?

The Viper typically weighs between 3–4 lbs, with slight variation by model. The self-support system distributes the weight across your body, allowing for a comfortable, tension-free playing experience.
