Mark Wood is widely recognized as one of the most influential innovators in the modern string world. A Juilliard-trained violinist and founding member of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, he pioneered the development of the electric violin, including the invention of the self-supporting Viper—an instrument that redefined performance for string players. His career spans global stages, broadcast compositions, and decades of educational impact, shaping not only how the violin is played, but how it is experienced.
Rather than adapting his playing to fit the limitations of a traditional violin, Mark began redesigning the instrument from the ground up. His early work led to the development of the first solid-body electric violin, introducing greater durability, amplification, and tonal control for modern performance environments.
That same mindset led to one of his most defining innovations: the Viper. By eliminating the need for a chin rest and shoulder support, the self-supporting design allows players to move freely and perform with a level of physical expression that was previously impossible.
Over time, these ideas expanded into a full range of electric string instruments, each built with the same intention—to remove limitations and give musicians more control over how they play, sound, and perform.
